On 30th July, EastEnders actress Pam St Clement was the special guest of Age UK Hertfordshire at the relaunch of their shop at 110 Darkes Lane, Potters Bar. Guests and well-wishers included the Deputy Mayor of Hertsmere, Cllr Peter Knell, shop staff; volunteers, regular customers, donators and supporters.

The event was to celebrate the merger of Age Concern and Help the Aged to form Age UK. The fascia of the shop had already been replaced in the bold, bright Age UK colours and logo.

Marion Birch, Chief Executive of Age UK Hertfordshire, introducing the actress who plays Pat Evans in the TV soap, she said, “Pam has been in the limelight for a very long time. She has a keen interest in the welfare of older people and is a founder member of Stage for Age, an organisation started by a group of show-business personalities to promote a better understanding of the needs of older people, and fundraising by making special appearances to support age-related events.”

Pam explained how strongly she feels about playing her part in helping people to have a happy, dignified and healthy retirement. She was delighted to meet so many volunteers of all ages in the Age UK shop. She urged the young volunteers at the shop to talk to the older people they met, because they could learn so much more that way than reading history books. “Talk to your friends, get more people to volunteer! ”She described the shop as, “Lovely, light, airy and beautifully laid out and wished all involved great success in the future."

Marion explained that that the shops raise money for older people, but the shopping experience is for everyone, with high quality clothes, books, and household goods to suit people of all ages and tastes. Also, that Age UK Hertfordshire always needs more volunteers, and more high quality goods.

If you would like to volunteer for Age UK Hertfordshire, we have a variety of roles to suit you.   Please call the HR Team Tel: 01707 386060 Email:volunteering@ageukherts.org.uk for more information.

Forget muesli and running a marathon, Simon Morley, Healthwise Coordinator reports on how getting healthy can be as simple as doing armchair exercises and as delicious as a smoothie cocktail

Healthwise organised a triple event in Borehamwood, Cheshunt and Potters Bar with the aim of encouraging people to engage in activity and to promote a healthier lifestyle and improved mental wellbeing. The Healthwise taster events allowed people a chance to try a mix of Tai Chi, yoga, seated exercise and Pilates and obtain nutritional advice. The Cheshunt event even had an opera singer who captivated the audience with the power and quality of her voice.  At the Borehamwood and Potters Bar events there was a nutritionist on hand to answer queries and take allergy tests. Representatives from the Police and Neighbourhood Watch also attended and offered advice on how to keep save and avoid scams.

A lot of organisation went into the events and the feedback was incredibly positive. All attendees’ comments demonstrated that those who had taken part had genuinely really enjoyed themselves.   As a direct result of the event, a group has been set up with some of the members who attended the Potters Bar session. The rolling 12 week Healthwise programme has regular participants and has also provided a way for people to meet others they previously wouldn’t have had an opportunity to meet.   Healthwise is available to those aged 50 plus.  For more information contact the coordinator:
